A decade of peace fails to stop the solar system's descent into war
In short: Ten years after the revolution, the Solar Republic is fracturing. As Darrow and Virginia struggle to lead, old enemies resurface and new factions emerge. From the Rim Dominion to the terrorist Red Hand, the fragile stability of the new order is being tested by betrayal, kidnapping, and the shadows of the old Society.
Set ten years after the events of Morning Star, Iron Gold follows the Solar Republic as it faces mounting instability. The Republic is led by Sovereign Virginia "Mustang" au Augustus and military commander Darrow "The Reaper" of Lykos. However, the peace is tenuous; the Republic faces continued conflict with the Society, led by Magnus au Grimmus (the Ash Lord) from Venus, and internal political pressure from Dancer, the leader of the socialist Vox Populi faction in the Senate.
The narrative weaves multiple complex political threads. In the Rim Dominion, Sovereign Romulus au Raa faces a coup led by his wife, Dido, which results in his imprisonment. Meanwhile, the terrorist group the Red Hand targets Mars, leading to the kidnapping of Darrow’s son, Pax, and Sevro’s daughter, Electra, by a freelance thief named Ephraim ti Horn. This abduction forces the Republic's leaders into a desperate search, while Darrow himself must navigate a dangerous mission to Venus to confront the Ash Lord.
The novel highlights the heavy cost of revolution and the difficulty of maintaining order. As Darrow and Sevro au Barca pursue the Ash Lord, they find a weakened Magnus, who reveals he was poisoned three years prior by Apollonius au Valii-Rath. The story underscores a cycle of violence where even those who fought for freedom, like the Red, find themselves caught in the crossfire of new power struggles and the shifting loyalties of the Gold elite.
