Headquartered in Munich, Germany, the International Democracy Union (IDU) serves as a global umbrella for mostly centre-<0xC2>right political parties. Founded on 24 June 1983, the organization emerged from a joint meeting in London, instigated by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and then-U.S. Vice President George H. W. Bush. It was originally established to unite the European, Caribbean, and Asia Pacific Democrat Unions.
The IDU is not merely a forum for discussion; it functions as a repository of political expertise. Member parties gain access to shared resources including opinion polling, advertising, campaign organization, and fund-raising techniques. This collaborative approach has seen significant historical precedents, such as the close strategic and resource-based cooperation between the Republican Party and the Conservative Party of Canada during the 2000s and 2010s.
While the group promotes democracy and centre-right policies, its membership is strictly defined. To qualify, a party must be a 'mainstream conservative' entity influenced by classical liberalism. The organization's leadership has shown a distinct pattern; since 1997, every Chairman has been a member of the Anglosphere, including representatives from Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. Currently, the IDU is chaired by Stephen Harper, the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada.
The network's influence extends through various regional and affiliated bodies, such as the European People's Party and the Democrat Union of Africa. While it shares some members with the more centrist Centrist Democrat International, the IDU maintains a distinct identity focused on its specific ideological criteria.
