In short: Founded in 1903 to support Jewish orphans, Isidore Newman School has evolved into one of Louisiana's most prestigious private institutions. Today, the New Orleans campus is known for producing elite athletes and maintaining rigorous academic standards, despite facing significant historical social divides and recent legal challenges.

Established by philanthropist Isidore Newman, the founder of the Maison Blanche department store chain, the school opened in 1904 as the Isidore Newman Manual Training School. While it was initially intended for Jewish orphans and supported by Jewish charities, the institution has grown into a comprehensive college preparatory school serving grades pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The institution's name was officially changed in 1931. It currently serves a student body of 1,055 pupils.

The school's history includes complex social dynamics. In the 20th century, a social distance existed between Jewish and non-Jewish students, often manifesting through private dances held by non-Jewish students. By approximately 1973, about 40% of the student body was Jewish. The campus, spanning 11 acres in New Orleans' uptown district, also faced significant disruption when Hurricane Katrina caused wind and flooding damage in 2005, leading to a two-month closure before reopening in January 2006. The school's facilities include the Cotonio Palaestra, which is the largest building on the grounds. A 3.67 GPA is required for students to qualify for the honor roll.

Newman has gained national recognition for its athletic pedigree, notably producing Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning and NFL wide receiver Ododell Beckham Jr. In 2010, ESPN.com ranked the school at the top of a survey regarding high schools that produce the best NFL players. However, the institution has also faced legal scrutiny; as of April 2022, a sealed federal civil rights lawsuit filed in 2018 remains active, concerning Title IX violations related to a separate lawsuit involving a student convicted of sexual battery. The school's athletic teams compete within the Louisiana High School Athletic Association. Notable alumni include baseball player Jeremy Bleich, who was drafted by the New York Yankees.
