How a century-old Missouri school evolved from a farmhouse into a modern athletic powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1910, Chaminade College Preparatory School in Creve Coeur has transformed from a single farmhouse into a sprawling campus. Today, this Marianist institution balances rigorous academics and community service with a massive athletic program, producing professional athletes and venture capitalists while maintaining its deep-rooted religious traditions and house system.
Established by the Society of Mary, the school honors Blessed Father William Joseph Chaminade, a priest who navigated the turbulence of the French Revolution. When it first opened in 1910, the campus consisted only of the original farmhouse and a single building, now known as Chaminade Hall. Over the decades, the school expanded significantly, adding a gymnasium in 1919 and later constructing a network of tunnels that allowed religious staff to traverse the grounds without stepping outside. By the 1950s, the campus grew further with new dormitories, a chapel, and additional residences.
The modern campus features specialized facilities like the Athletictron, which houses a swimming pool used by local teams, and the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts, opened in 2011. The school’s academic reach is equally broad, offering 23 Advanced Placement courses alongside 59 college-credit options through local universities. Students are organized into five houses, each named after significant figures in Marianist history, such as C. Vincent Gray, the first Black member of the order in the St. Louis Province, and Marie Therese de Lamourous, a close associate of the founder.
Beyond the classroom, the school emphasizes service, with students completing up to 50 hours of community work annually. Its athletic program is highly competitive, participating in the Metro Catholic Conference and securing 25 state championships. The school’s alumni network includes notable figures across sports and business, such as NBA players Bradley Beal and David Lee, and venture capitalist John Doerr. From its humble beginnings in a farmhouse to its current status, the school remains a fixture of the St. Louis educational landscape.
