The fractured legacy of the First Fitna and the origins of Islamic branches
Beyond the familiar distinction between Sunni and Shia lies a complex web of jurisprudence, theology, and historical schisms. From the radical Kharijites to the rationalist Mu'tazila, the evolution of Islamic thought was shaped by intense debates over political succession and the very nature of divine revelation.
The fundamental division in Islam emerged from a dispute over leadership following the death of the Prophet Muhammad. Sunni Islam, the world's largest religious denomination, traces its legitimacy to the selection of Abu Bakr. In contrast, Shia Islam, or the 'party of Ali,' maintains that Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, Ali ibn Abi Talib, was the intended successor, followed by a line of divinely appointed Imams.
This political rift was further complicated by the Kharijites, a group that broke away during the First Fitna. Known for their radical approach to excommunication, they declared both Sunnis and Shias to be apostates. While most Kharijite branches disappeared, the Ibadi tradition survives today as a distinct third branch. This historical tension also left a mark on jurisprudence, with Sunni Islam developing four major legal schools—Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali—while Shia Islam is primarily guided by the Ja'fari school.
Theological debates added further layers of nuance. Schools like the Ash'ari and Maturidi sought to balance revelation with reason, while the Mu'tazilite school championed rationalism, arguing that the Quran was a created revelation to preserve God's absolute oneness. Meanwhile, movements like the 18th-century Salafi revival led by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab sought a return to the practices of the earliest generations. Today, the landscape remains diverse, encompassing everything from the mystical traditions of Sufism and Alevism to modern movements like the Ahmadiyya and Quranism.
