From humble aircraft maintenance to global aerospace giant: the story of Israel Aerospace Industries
In short: Founded in 1953 to maintain military aircraft, Israel Aerospace Industries evolved into a state-owned powerhouse. Today, it designs everything from advanced fighter jets and satellites to anti-ship missiles and drone defense systems, serving both the Israel Defense Forces and international markets with high-tech engineering and aviation solutions.
Established as Bedek Aviation Company under the guidance of Shimon Peres, the firm initially focused on servicing Israel Defense Forces aircraft with a modest team of 70 employees. By 1959, the company began manufacturing its own aircraft, starting with the Fouga CM.170 Magister trainer. The company's trajectory shifted significantly in the late 1960s following a French arms embargo, which spurred the development of indigenous fighter jets like the IAI Nesher and the subsequent IAI Kfir. These projects solidified the company's reputation for adapting existing designs to meet specific national security requirements.
The 1980s marked a period of intense ambition and subsequent restructuring. The government-backed IAI Lavi fighter program, while technologically advanced, was cancelled in 1987 due to economic concerns, leading to a workforce reduction of 5,500 people. However, the expertise gained during the Lavi project allowed IAI to pivot toward becoming a global leader in aircraft modernization and high-tech electronics. By 1989, the company had successfully returned to profitability, leveraging its four core divisions—Aircraft, Aviation, Electronics, and Technologies—to dominate markets ranging from satellite systems to business jet manufacturing.
Renamed Israel Aerospace Industries in 2006 to reflect its expanded scope, the company now operates as a major defense and aerospace manufacturer. Its portfolio includes the EL/W-2085 airborne early warning system and various loitering munitions. Beyond military hardware, IAI maintains a significant footprint in civil aviation, including the conversion of passenger airliners into freighters and the development of business jets in partnership with firms like Gulfstream. Recognized for its commitment to ethics and anti-corruption programs, IAI continues to balance its role as a core supplier for the Israel Defense Forces with a diverse array of international commercial and defense contracts.
