In short: Before topping the Billboard 200, Jackson Wang was a world-class fencer raised in a family of elite athletes. He traded a potential career in sports for K-pop, eventually building a self-directed empire that spans music, fashion, and global brand partnerships, all while insisting on creative control over his own work.

Born in Hong Kong in 1994, Jackson Wang was groomed for athletic excellence. His father was an Olympic fencer and his mother a national gymnast. By 2011, Wang had reached the pinnacle of youth fencing, winning gold at the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championship. His success was so profound that he turned down scholarships from Stanford and the University of Hong Kong to pursue a career in South Korean entertainment after passing a competitive audition for JYP Entertainment.

Wang’s transition to music was marked by a strategic use of variety television. Recognizing that he needed a platform to build a reputation as a foreigner in South Korea, he appeared on numerous shows, eventually becoming a household name. However, this success created a conflict: he felt stereotyped as a comedian rather than a musician. To regain control, he began distancing himself from variety television in 2018, focusing instead on his own label, Team Wang, which he founded in 2017 to manage his solo career and creative vision.

Today, Wang is a multifaceted artist who writes, composes, and directs his own music videos. His albums have consistently climbed the US charts, with his 2025 release Magic Man 2 reaching number 13 on the Billboard 200. Beyond music, he has become a global brand ambassador for companies like Louis Vuitton and Hennessy. Despite his massive fame, he remains focused on his goal of being irreplaceable, a work ethic he attributes to the discipline he learned during his years as a competitive fencer.
