The 'Slap of Tunis' and the rise of a Mediterranean empire

Italy arrived late to the colonial race, a secondary power navigating the ambitions of Britain and France. Driven by a desire for prestige and the romanticized legacy of Rome, the nation transformed from a Mediterranean trader into a global colonial force.

The genesis of the modern Italian colonial empire began not with conquest, but with commerce. In 1869, an Italian navigation company purchased Assab Bay on the Red Sea to establish a coaling station for the newly opened Suez Canal. By 1882, the Italian government had taken control of this territory, marking its first overseas possession. This era of expansion was heavily influenced by the 'Slap of Tunis' in 1881, when France established a protectorate over Tunisia, a move that deeply shocked the Italian press and signaled Italy's isolation in European affairs.

Italy's imperial ambitions were often fueled by a sense of national humiliation and a longing for 'Mare Nostrum'—the Roman ideal of 'Our Sea.' This was particularly evident after the 1898 failed attempt to demand Sanmen Bay in China, which led to the fall of the Italian government. To assert its status as a Great Power, Italy sought territories in Africa and the Mediterranean. This led to the annexation of Massawa in Eritrea in 1885 and the subsequent Italo-Ethiopian War. While the 1896 Battle of Adwa resulted in a devastating defeat for Italy, the nation continued to expand through the 20th century.

Under the Fascist leadership of Benito Mussolini after 1922, the empire underwent 'demographic colonization.' The government encouraged large-scale settlement to satisfy nationalist claims. By 1939, Italian settlers numbered between 120,000 and 150,000 in Libya and 165,000 in Italian East Africa. At its peak between 1936 and 1941, the empire included Libya, Eritrea, Somalia, and Ethiopia, alongside the Dodecanese Islands and parts of Albania. This era of expansion eventually collapsed in 1943 as Allied forces reclaimed these territories, leading to the official relinquishment of colonial claims in 1947.
