From Milošević's spokesman to Serbia's prime minister: the political evolution of Ivica Dačić
In short: How does a politician rise from the shadow of a fallen dictator to lead a nation toward the European Union? Known as 'Little Sloba,' Ivica Dačić mastered the art of pragmatic survival, transforming a nationalist party into a cornerstone of modern Serbian governance.
Ivica Dačić’s political trajectory is defined by a remarkable capacity for adaptation. Rising through the ranks of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) in the early 1990s, he served as a prominent spokesman under his mentor, Slobodan Milošević. During this era, he was often viewed through a nationalist lens, earning the nickname 'Little Sloba' due to his close ties to the former president. However, following the fall of the Milošević regime, Dačić began a calculated pivot toward the political mainstream.
His leadership style is characterized by pragmatism and a willingness to form unlikely alliances. In 2008, he led the SPS into a coalition with the Democratic Party, a group that had previously helped oust Milošević. This shift helped Serbia achieve EU candidate status. Later, in 2012, he formed a government with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), assuming the role of Prime Minister. This period saw him navigating complex geopolitical tensions, including the signing of the Brussels Agreement to normalize relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Despite his pro-European maneuvers, Dačić remains a polarizing figure. While supporters point to his role in facilitating visa-free travel for Serbians and the handover of war criminals like Ratko Mladić, critics describe his positions as populist. He has even faced extreme personal threats, including a reported 10 million € assassination plot by drug boss Darko Šarić in 2012. Whether viewed as a cunning strategist or a nationalist remnant, his ability to retain power across decades of Serbian political upheaval remains a subject of intense study.
