In short: Garret Lee, known professionally as Jacknife Lee, began his career as a guitarist in the Dublin garage-punk band Compulsion. Following the group's dissolution, he pivoted toward electronica, eventually becoming one of the most sought-after producers and mixers in the music industry, collaborating with artists ranging from U2 to Taylor Swift.

Lee's transition from a band member to a solo artist began in the late 1990s. His debut EP, A Dog Named Snuggles, was released in 1998 under the moniker Jacknife through Pussyfoot Records, a label established by Howie B. By the time he released his first full-length album, Muy Rico, also in 1998, he had adopted the name Jacknife Lee. His discography expanded in 2001 with the release of Punk Rock High Roller, and he later explored different creative identities, such as recording under the name Jack Planck for the One Little Indian label.

Beyond his solo projects, Lee built a reputation as a prolific producer and remixer. His production credits include significant albums like R.E.M.'s 2008 release Accelerate and their final studio album, Collapse into Now, which arrived in 2011. His work spans a vast array of genres and high-profile acts, including Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club, Crystal Castles, and One Direction. As a remixer, he has reimagined tracks for artists such as Radiohead, Blur, Kraftwerk, and Run-DMC, often pushing the boundaries of the original compositions.

Lee's versatility extends into live performance and collaborative projects. In 2022 and 2023, he served as the musical director, keyboardist, and percussionist for Bono's Stories of Surrender theater tour. More recently, in July 2023, he joined forces with Lol Tolhurst and Budgie to announce the album Los Angeles, which was released in November of that same year via PIAS Recordings. His career trajectory illustrates a unique path from the raw energy of the Dublin punk scene to the sophisticated, multi-genre production landscape that defines contemporary music, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in modern sound engineering and artistry.
