The versatile architect behind some of modern indie rock's most iconic sounds
In short: From the Mercury Prize-winning Klaxons to the chart-topping Arctic Monkeys, James Ford has shaped the sonic landscape of the last two decades. Whether as a drummer in The Last Shadow Puppets or a producer for DepeCO Mode, his influence spans across genres and eras.
Born in Staffordshire in 1978, James Ellis Ford’s path to the recording studio was not initially paved with music. He studied biology at Manchester University, graduating with a lower second-class honours degree in 2002. However, his musical career would soon move from the laboratory to the forefront of the UK indie scene, beginning with his role as a founding member of the group Simian.
Ford’s production credits represent a massive breadth of contemporary talent. In 2007, he achieved significant critical success, producing the Klaxons' Mercury Prize-winning album, 'Myths of the Near Future', and the Arctic Monkeys' second album. His relationship with the Arctic Monkeys has been particularly enduring; following his work on 'Favourite Worst Nightmare', he has been involved in at least part of the production for every subsequent album, including the 2013 hit 'AM'.
His versatility extends to various roles and genres. As a performer, he formed the duo Simian Mobile Disco and joined Miles Kane and Alex Turner in The Last Shadow Puppets, where he served as both drummer and producer for their UK number one debut, 'The Age of the Understatement'. His production portfolio also includes work for Depeche Mode, Gorillaz, Florence and the Machine, and the Pet Shop Boys.
In recent years, Ford has also explored solo work. Following his 2023 release 'The Hum', his second solo album, 'Lost In Another and Another World', was released in August 2026. This project holds a poignant personal dimension, as it was written and recorded while Ford was battling acute myeloid leukemia.
