How a drunken retelling of Otis Redding's death inspired a comedy hit
In short: Before he was a household name on New Girl, Jake Johnson was a waiter and production assistant in Los Angeles. His path from Iowa student to Hollywood actor involves improv troupes, prestigious writing fellowships, and a chance conversation that birtended a television phenomenon.
Born Mark Jake Johnson Weinberger in 1978, the American actor's personal history is marked by significant shifts. Raised in Winnetka, Illinois, by a single mother, he eventually adopted his mother's surname, Johnson, during his high school years. His name serves as a tribute to his maternal uncle, Mark Johnson, who died in a motorcycle accident in 1977.
Johnson's professional foundation was built on writing and improv. After studying at the University of Iowa, he moved to New York to attend NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. His talent for dramatic writing was recognized early with the Sloan Fellowship for Screenwriting and the 2002 John Golden Playwriting Prize. In New York, he also helped form the sketch comedy group The Midwesterners, drawing inspiration from the style of HBO's Mr. Show.
His transition to mainstream fame arrived via the Fox sitcom New Girl (2011–2018), where his performance as Nick Miller earned a 2013 Critics' Choice Television Award nomination. Beyond live-action, he has voiced Peter B. Parker in the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse franchise. Interestingly, his influence extends to the creation of the series Drunk History; the show's concept emerged from a 2007 conversation where Johnson, while intoxicated, attempted to recount the death of Otis Redding to creator Derek Waters.
In recent years, Johnson has expanded his repertoire into directing and podcasting. He made his directorial debut in 2023 with the film Self Reliance and launched the advice podcast We're Here to Help alongside Gareth Reynolds. Despite his Hollywood success, his roots remain tied to Chicago, where he remains a supporter of the Bears and the Cubs.
