In short: Prashant Kishor, once India's most influential election strategist, pivoted to founding the Jan Suraaj Party. Rooted in Gandhian principles, the movement spent two years walking through thousands of villages to draft a long-term development roadmap. But when the ballot boxes opened, the party faced a harsh reality check at the polls.

The Jan Suraaj Party, or People's Good Governance Party, was officially launched on 2 October 2024, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. Its founder, Prashant Kishor, had previously spent years orchestrating successful election campaigns for various Indian political entities before announcing his retirement from strategy in May 2021. By May 2022, however, he pivoted toward a new mission: engaging directly with the people of Bihar. This initiative began as the Jan Suraaj Abhiyan, a movement that included a massive statewide padyatra—a foot march—that started at the Gandhi Ashram in Champaran. Over two years, Kishor visited more than 5,000 villages to gather community input for a 15-year vision document covering sectors like education, health, and agriculture.

The party’s electoral debut in the 2025 Bihar Legislative Assembly elections proved challenging. Contesting 238 seats without any alliances, the party campaigned on a platform emphasizing professional qualifications and the exclusion of criminal backgrounds or political dynasties. Their symbol, a school bag, underscored a commitment to education and youth issues. Despite these efforts, the party failed to secure a single seat in the assembly, capturing only 3.44% of the total vote share. In 68 constituencies, the party actually performed worse than the None of the Above option, and they finished in the top two positions in only one seat across the entire state.

Despite the initial setback, the party found a path forward through persistence. In August 2026, Prashant Kishor achieved a significant milestone by winning the Bankipur Assembly by-election, marking the party’s first victory in the Bihar Legislative Assembly. This success followed earlier, smaller electoral wins, such as the April 2023 victory of Afaq Ahmad in the Bihar legislative council bypolls. With a claimed membership base of 1 crore individuals and leadership roles held by figures like former IFS officer Manoj Bharti and former MP Uday Singh, the party continues to navigate the complex dynamics of Bihar's political environment, attempting to translate grassroots engagement into sustainable legislative influence.
