From St. Louis track star to Detroit Lions wide receiver: The rise of Jamo
In short: Jameson Williams has carved a unique path through elite college football programs and into the NFL. Known for his explosive speed and versatility, the wide receiver overcame a major collegiate injury and league suspensions to become a key playmaker for the Detroit Lions, recently securing a significant multi-year contract extension.
Born in 2001 in St. Louis, Missouri, Jameson Williams demonstrated athletic prowess early, excelling in both football and track at Cardinal Ritter College Prep. His high school career was marked by dominant performances, including state-level success in the 300-meter hurdles. This foundation led him to Ohio State, where he spent two seasons before transferring to Alabama in 2021. His single season with the Crimson Tide was statistically prolific; he led the SEC in receiving yards, touchdowns, and yards per reception, earning All-American honors before a torn ACL in the national championship game altered his trajectory.
The Detroit Lions selected Williams 12th overall in the 2022 NFL draft, trading up to acquire him. His professional start was delayed by his recovery from the knee injury, but he soon showcased his big-play ability. His career has faced hurdles, including a six-game suspension in 2023 for violating league gambling policies by placing bets on college games while at a team hotel, and a subsequent two-game suspension in 2024 for a performance-enhancing substances policy violation.
Despite these setbacks, Williams has become a central figure in the Lions' offense. By the 2025 season, his production reached new heights, recording 1,117 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. Following this performance, he signed a three-year contract extension valued at up to $83 million. Beyond his professional achievements, Williams maintains a connection to the league through his cousin, Kyren Williams, who plays as a running back for the Los Angeles Rams.
