In short: Jane Sibbett was the original choice for the role of Debra Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond. She signed a contract for the part in 1996, but stepped down after discovering the show's star and creators were unaware of her casting. The role ultimately went to Patricia Heaton instead.

Born in Berkeley, California, in 1962, Jane Sibbett built a prolific career across television and film. After graduating from the University of California, Los Angeles, she began her professional acting journey in 1986 on the soap opera Santa Barbara. Her early work earned her a nomination for a Best Newcomer Soap Opera Digest Award, setting the stage for a series of high-profile roles throughout the 1990s.

Sibbett is perhaps best recognized for her portrayal of Carol Willick on the cultural phenomenon Friends, a recurring role she maintained from 1994 until 2001. Before this, she gained a cult following as the status-conscious Heddy Newman on the Fox sitcom Herman's Head, which ran for three seasons starting in 1991. Her filmography is equally diverse, spanning projects from the 1992 horror film The Resurrected to the 1995 family comedy It Takes Two, where she starred alongside Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen.

Beyond her acting credits, Sibbett has transitioned into writing and advocacy. In 2019, she received the Michael D Publishers Award to support the completion of her memoirs, About Jane, and has served as a faculty member at the Story Summit Writer's School. Her commitment to social causes is highlighted by her long-standing work with the 1736 Family Crisis Center in Los Angeles, where she supports survivors of domestic violence. Today, her career reflects a blend of creative storytelling and community engagement, moving well beyond the industry near-misses that defined her mid-nineties television tenure.
