The record-breaking Indian epic that used denim to launch a cinematic phenomenon
In short: In 1998, a single film redefined the scale of Indian cinema. With a then-unprecedented budget, it traveled from the Grand Canyon to the Great Wall of China, using elaborate identity swaps and high-tech special effects to create a visual spectacle that remains a technical landmark.
Released on 24 April 1998, *Jeans* was the most expensive film in Indian cinema at the time, produced with a record budget of ₹20 crore. Directed by Shankar, the production was a massive logistical undertaking that spanned the globe. The crew traveled to the United States—filming in locations like Las Vegas, California, and the Grand Canyon—and embarked on a thirty-day journey around the world to capture iconic landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, and the Colosseum.
The film's identity is deeply tied to its title. While producer Ashok Amritraj suggested the name was a homophone for "genes" to reflect the story of identical twins, director Shankar viewed it as a nod to the association between youth and denim. This theme extended to the film's marketing; even the audio cassettes were wrapped in denim fabric to create a memorable experience for listeners.
The narrative centers on the complex lives of identical twins, Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy. The plot involves elaborate deceptions, including a character pretending to be a long-lost twin sister to satisfy a father's obsession with twin marriages. Beyond the drama, the film was a technical pioneer, earning a National Film Award for Best Special Effects and serving as India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Despite its grandeur, the film's legacy is a subject of critical debate. While some reviewers praised the 'virtual reality' effects and A.R. Rahman's 'hummable' score, others criticized the screenplay for being bogged down by its own scale. Nevertheless, its commercial success in Tamil Nadu and Malaysia remains a testament to its visual ambition.
