How a local journalist from Hartlepool became the voice of British football broadcasting
In short: Before he became a household name hosting Gillette Soccer Saturday, Jeff Stelling cut his teeth at the Hartlepool Mail. His career spans decades of radio, television, and charity work, proving that a mix of professionalism and genuine personality can turn a sports presenter into a national institution.
Born in 1955, Robert Jeffrey Stelling began his career in journalism at the Hartlepool Mail before moving into broadcasting with Radio Tees in the late 1970s. His early career saw him reporting on Middlesbrough F.C. and covering the Olympic Games for BBC Radio 2. By 1992, he had joined Sky, where he would eventually spend 25 years hosting the iconic Gillette Soccer Saturday. His tenure on the show, which featured pundits like Chris Kamara and George Best, earned him widespread acclaim for his professionalism and élan.
Stelling’s versatility extended far beyond football. He hosted the game show Countdown from 2009 to 2011 and ITV’s Alphabetical in 2016. He also took on high-profile roles like presenting Champions League coverage between 2011 and 2015. Despite his success, his career was not without challenges; in 2020, he revealed he had been the target of a £50,000 blackmail attempt involving false accusations, which he successfully navigated with the help of authorities.
Beyond the studio, Stelling is known for his significant charitable efforts. He has completed the London Marathon eight times and raised over £420,000 for Prostate Cancer UK by walking 262 miles from Hartlepool to Wembley in 2016. His contributions to sport, broadcasting, and charity were formally recognized in the 2024 New Year Honours, where he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire. Today, he continues his career on Talksport, maintaining a presence that has spanned over four decades of British media history.
