How a Detroit boy became the unstoppable force known as "The Bus"
In short: Before he was a Hall of Fame legend, Jerome Bettis was a bowling enthusiast from Detroit facing asthma and poverty. His journey from selling crack cocaine with his brother to becoming one of the most dominant power runners in NFL history is a testament to sheer physical and mental resilience.
Jerome Bettis, nicknamed "the Bus" for his massive frame and punishing running style, carved out a 13-season career defined by relentless power. After a stellar collegiate career at Notre Dame—where he set a school record with 20 touchdowns in a single season—he entered the NFL in 1993 as the 10th overall pick for the Los Angeles Rams. His rookie season was nothing short of historic, earning him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and a First-team All-Pro selection.
A pivotal moment in his career occurred in 1996 when, seeking more opportunities as a primary rusher rather than a blocking fullback, Bettis requested a trade. He joined the Pittsburgh Steelers, a move that would cement his legacy. In his first year in Pittsburgh, he was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year and helped the franchise secure its first title in over two decades with a victory in Super Bowl XL on February 5, 2006.
Bettis's career was not without statistical oddities or controversy. In 2004, he once scored three touchdowns while averaging just 0.2 yards per carry. He was also at the center of a famous officiating controversy during a 1998 Thanksgiving game, where a disputed coin toss call resulted in the NFL changing its rules to ensure calls are made before the toss. Ultimately, he retired as the fifth all-time leading rusher in NFL history, finishing with 13,662 yards and 91 touchdowns.
