In short: When the Indianapolis Colts selected Edgerrin James fourth overall in 1999, some argued they should have taken Heisman winner Ricky Williams instead. James responded by leading the league in rushing in his rookie season, beginning a career that would see him amass over 12,000 yards and a place in the Hall of Fame.

James’s ascent began at the University of Miami, where he became the first player in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. By the time he entered the NFL, he was a proven force, earning first-team All-Big East honors in 1998. His professional career was defined by immediate impact and sustained excellence, specifically during his eleven seasons in the league.

His tenure with the Indianapolis Colts established him as a premier talent. After being drafted in the first round, he was named the 1999 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. He achieved the rare feat of leading the NFL in rushing yards in both his first and second seasons. While his time in Indianapolis was marked by high-level production, including four Pro Bowl selections, it was also marked by injury, such as a torn ACL in 2001.

The latter half of his career saw James transition to the Arizona Cardinals, where he played a key role in the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance, Super Bowl XLIII. His career was ultimately shaped by personal tragedy; following the death of his long-time girlfriend, Andia Wilson, from leukemia in 2009, James requested his release from the Cardinals to focus on raising his four children. He finished his career with 12,246 rushing yards, ranking 11th all-time at the time of his final game, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
