In short: Jerry Kill is a journeyman college football coach known for turning around struggling programs. His career has been defined by both remarkable on-field success and a series of public health challenges, including epilepsy, which forced him to step away from the game he loves multiple times across several decades.

Born in Cheney, Kansas, in 1961, Jerry Kill became the first in his working-class family to graduate from college. His coaching journey began at Saginaw Valley State University in 1994, where he established a reputation for building winning programs. By the time he moved to Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2001, he was already credited with transforming teams. His tenure at Southern Illinois included a perfect 9-0 record against Division I-AA opponents in 2004 and a number one ranking for ten consecutive weeks.

Kill's career trajectory saw him take increasingly prestigious roles, including at Northern Illinois University and the University of Minnesota. However, his tenure at Minnesota was marked by significant health struggles. Diagnosed with kidney cancer—now in remission—and suffering from epilepsy, Kill faced repeated gameday seizures. These medical issues led to a leave of absence in 2013 and his eventual resignation in October 2015. Despite these setbacks, he returned to coaching at TCU and later New Mexico State, where he secured a Quick Lane Bowl victory in 2022.

The ethics of coaching transitions have often followed Kill. His departure from Northern Illinois in 2010, announced just days before a bowl game, sparked a national debate regarding whether the NCAA should restrict coaches from abandoning teams before their final postseason appearances. Players were reportedly blindsided, learning of his move to Minnesota via social media. Despite the controversy and the physical toll of his condition, Kill has remained a fixture in college football, currently serving as a consultant at Vanderbilt as of 2024.
