In short: In 1988, Kansas State football was a losing machine, suffering through a 26-game winless streak. When Bill Snyder arrived, the program was widely considered the most unsuccessful in the country. Decades later, he had rewritten the school's history, leaving a legacy that redefined collegiate rebuilding.

When Bill Snyder was hired by Kansas State in November 1988, the program was in crisis. The Wildcats held a cumulative record of 299–510, the most losses in Division I-A at the time. They had gone 0–26–1 in their previous 26 games and had not won a conference title since 1934. Even Sports Illustrated had labeled the school "America's most hapless team."

Snyder's impact was immediate and transformative. To signal a new era, he commissioned a new helmet logo, the "Powercat," to move away from the school's losing reputation. By 1993, he led the team to its first bowl victory, and by 1995, the Wildcats achieved their first 10-win season and a top-ten national ranking. His success included a 1998 regular season where the team went 11–0, earning a No. 1 national ranking.

Snyder's influence extended beyond the scoreboard. His coaching tree includes eleven assistants who became Division I head coaches, such as Bob Stoops and Bret Bielema. By the time he retired for the second time on December 2, 2018, he had amassed 215 victories at Kansas State—a total that surpassed the combined wins of every other coach in the program's history since 1928.

His accomplishments were recognized by the College Football Hall of Fame in 2015. Today, his impact is immortalized at the school through the Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium, a name he requested to honor his family.
