In short: Jessie Diggins is the most accomplished cross-country skier in United States history. From her early days in Minnesota to becoming an Olympic gold medalist, she has shattered decades-old records and become a powerful voice for climate change advocacy and eating disorder awareness.

Diggins' ascent in professional skiing began in earnest around 2011 when she joined the United States Ski Team. Her impact on the sport was immediate and transformative for American skiing. In 2018, alongside teammate Kikkan Randall, she secured the first-ever Olympic gold medal for the United States in cross-country skiing during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. This triumph represented a milestone, representing the initial US cross-country skiing award since Bill Koch took silver during 1976.

Her dominance continued through the early 2020s. She became the first American woman to win a World Cup season title in 2021, a feat previously achieved only by Koch in 1982. Diggins has since secured multiple overall titles, including the 2023–24, 2024–25, and 2025–26 seasons. Even when facing physical adversity, such as a partially torn plantar fascia during the 2024–25 season or bruised ribs following a crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics, she has maintained her position at the pinnacle of the sport.

Beyond her athletic achievements, Diggins has used her platform for significant social advocacy. She serves as an ambassador for Protect Our Winters to address climate change and works with the Emily Program to reduce the stigma surrounding eating disorders. Having shared her own experience with bulimia, she aims to inspire empowerment and self-acceptance in others. Diggins has announced she will retire from competitive cross-country skiing following the 2025–26 season.
