Can a person be both Jewish and Christian at the same time?
In short: For decades, the organization Jews for Jesus has claimed that belief in Jesus is fully compatible with Jewish identity. However, most Jewish religious authorities and communal leaders view this mission as an unbridgeable departure from Judaism, sparking intense controversy over religious boundaries and identity.
Founded in 1970 by Moishe Rosen—originally as Hineni Ministries—Jews for Jesus is a Christian missionary organization based in San Francisco. While the group seeks to harmonize Jewish heritage with Christian faith, its presence is deeply contested. The organization's core belief is that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God, a doctrine that Jewish religious authorities and the State of Israel maintain is fundamentally incompatible with Judaism.
The tension is not merely theological but communal. In 1993, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York issued a statement, endorsed by all four major Jewish denominations, opposing the tactics of Hebrew-Christian groups. Critics, such as Rabbi Efraim Davidson of Torah Atlanta, have accused the group of using deceptive methods to target vulnerable populations. Conversely, some scholars, like UC Berkeley professor Daniel Boyarin, suggest that early Christian practices were deeply rooted in the Jewish traditions of the first and second centuries.
The debate also extends to the Christian world. Some liberal Protestant denominations, including the United Church of Christ, have criticized the group's evangelism of Jews, arguing that Jews already hold a valid covenant with God. Despite these pressures, the organization has expanded globally, with plans to maintain offices in 15 cities across 11 countries by 2026. The group's history is also marked by legal battles, including 1998 litigation over cybersquatting and a 2006 lawsuit by comedian Jackie Mason regarding the unauthorized use of his likeness.
