In short: Before her rise to stardom, Jhené Aiko was marketed as the cousin of rapper Lil' Fizz. While the connection was actually a strategic move by her labels, this early exposure helped build the foundation for a career spanning four studio albums and dozens of singles.

Jhené Aiko's career began with a calculated marketing strategy. Her labels—Sony, TUG, and Epic—used an alleged familial connection to the B2K rapper Lil' Fizz to attract an audience. While Aiko clarified that they are not actually related, she noted they grew up together and were close like family. This early momentum saw her 15-year-old self appearing on BET's 106 & Park in 2003 with the CD single "No L.O.V.E." The single was accompanied by a music video. This debut release occurred when she was only fifteen years old.

However, her initial trajectory was interrupted by industry friction. A planned debut album, My Name Is Jhené, was shelved due to internal issues at Epic. This setback led Aiko to request a release from the label so she could prioritize her education and family. Her comeback to music occurred in March 2011 through her debut full-length mixtape, Sailing Soul(s).

Aiko's commercial breakthrough arrived through strategic collaborations and new partnerships. In December 2011, she signed with Artium, a label owned by producer No I.D. and distributed through Def Jam. She reached her initial top-40 US Billboard Hot 100 success in 2013 via the Lil Wayne-assisted Big Sean track "Beware". This success paved the way for her debut studio album, Souled Out, released in 2014 following her EP, Sail Out. Her first EP was titled Sail Out. This project was supported by tracks such as Bed Peace and The Worst.
