Jhené Aiko: The R&B Artist Who Decided to Sail Herself Instead of Sell Herself
In short: After a stalled start in the music industry as a teenager, Jhené Aiko rejected traditional marketing tactics to forge a path defined by raw, freestyle songwriting. Her unique approach to alternative R&B has earned her Grammy nominations and a loyal following, proving that vulnerability can be a powerful creative engine.
Born in Los Angeles in 1988, Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo began her career in 2002 as a backing vocalist for the group B2K. Early in her journey, labels attempted to market her as the cousin of B2K member Lil' Fizz—a fabrication she later moved past. Following a hiatus to focus on her education and the birth of her daughter, Aiko returned to music in 2011 with the mixtape Sailing Soul(s). This project marked a turning point; she famously decided to 'sail' herself rather than 'sell' herself, a philosophy that would guide her creative independence.
Aiko’s sound is often categorized as alternative R&B, characterized by a feathery, high-pitched vocal delivery and emotive, boundary-pushing lyrics. Her process is deeply personal; she frequently uses a freestyle method, singing melodies until words emerge, and often records while high to tap into inspiration. She views her songwriting as a form of sacrifice, noting that she loses a piece of herself with every song she completes. This commitment to authenticity is reflected in her 2017 book, 2Fish, which collects poems and drawings created since she was twelve.
Her commercial breakthrough arrived with the 2013 EP Sail Out, which featured the quintuple-platinum single 'The Worst'. She has since released successful studio albums including Souled Out, Trip, and Chilombo, the latter of which earned her three Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Beyond her solo work, Aiko has collaborated with artists like Big Sean, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. Despite the pressures of the industry, she remains focused on her own artistic vision, citing influences ranging from Tupac and Kid Cudi to Brandy and John Mayer, while maintaining a career that balances commercial success with a deeply introspective, often autobiographical, creative spirit.
