In short: Billy Russo was once a handsome hitman known as The Beaut. After a brutal encounter with the Punisher left his face a shredded mess of scars, he reinvented himself as Jigsaw. Lacking superhuman powers, he relies on sheer grit, criminal organization, and an obsessive vendetta to haunt his nemesis.

Created by writer Len Wein and artist Ross Andru, Jigsaw first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #162 in November 1976. Originally a hitman for the Italian criminal underworld, Russo's life changed when he was thrown through a glass window pane by Frank Castle. The resulting disfigurement transformed him into a living jigsaw puzzle of scars, prompting him to adopt his iconic moniker. Unlike many comic book villains, Jigsaw possesses no superhuman abilities; instead, he has honed his physical strength to match the Punisher through years of prison training and utilizes his deep experience with street-fighting techniques and weaponry.

Jigsaw's relationship with the Punisher is defined by a cycle of violence and resurrection. Whether he is framing the Punisher for murder, leading assassination squads, or orchestrating gunrunning operations, his goal remains the destruction of Frank Castle. His persistence is legendary, surviving everything from being shot and left for dead in the jungle to being thrown into a glass crusher. Even when he is seemingly killed—such as being stabbed in the throat with a sword after the Punisher became the leader of the Hand—the character has frequently returned through various narrative devices, including resurrection and alternate-universe iterations.

The character has transcended the page, appearing in numerous video games and film adaptations. While comic versions often emphasize his role as a mob-connected hitman, screen portrayals have varied significantly. In the 2017 Netflix series The Punisher, Ben Barnes depicts Russo as a former brother-in-arms to Castle, grounding the rivalry in a shared military past. Critics have occasionally questioned his inclusion in certain storylines, such as the MAX imprint, where his presence was sometimes viewed as a nod to cinematic popularity rather than narrative necessity. Regardless of the medium, Jigsaw remains a fixture of the Punisher's world, serving as a dark reflection of the vigilante's own violent path.
