The transgressive writer who claimed he enjoyed the violence
In short: Jim Goad is the self-described misanthrope and 'poster boy' for transgressive writing. From self-publishing controversial zines to serving prison time for assault, his career is a jagged landscape of social commentary, shock value, and a refusal to apologize for the darkness he explores.
Born in Pennsylvania around 1960 or 1961, Goad’s early life was marked by violent treatment from both parents and school bullies. Such upheaval forged a literary approach that Chuck Palahniuk characterized as brutally honest regardless of correctness. Goad frequently explores tensions between social strata, a core concept in his 1997 publication, The Redneck Manifesto, which claims American elites exploit tribalism to pit the middle and lower classes against each other.
His career reached a fever pitch in the 1990s with the publication of the magazine Answer Me! Alongside his then-wife Debbie Goad, he used the zine to challenge political correctness through provocative coverage of race and feminism. The publication was so controversial it was seized by customs in several countries. Goad's influence has been noted in unexpected places, from the motivations of White House attacker Francisco Martin Duran to the suicide of Kurt Cobain.
Goad's personal life has been as turbulent as his prose. In 1998, he was charged with assault and kidnapping following an incident involving his then-girlfriend, Anne "Skye" Ryan. Following a guilty plea to diminished charges, Goad spent two and a half years in custody before his 2000 autumn release. Upon being questioned regarding his remorse for the violence, he famously answered, "Absolutely not." I enjoyed it."
While often associated with the alt-right and cited as a favorite by figures like Gavin McInnes, Goad himself does not claim membership in the movement. His work remains a polarizing study of American culture, ranging from the autobiographical grit of Shit Magnet, written during his incarceration, to the satirical absurdity of his comic strip Trucker Fags in Denial.
