In short: Mark Simpson, known professionally as Jock, began his career at the British magazine 2000 AD before becoming a powerhouse in American comics and film design. From illustrating iconic characters like Batman and Judge Dredd to crafting concept art for major cinema, his visual style has left a lasting mark.

Born in 1972, the Scottish artist Mark Simpson adopted the pen name Jock as he rose to prominence within the British comics industry. His early work at 2000 AD, including contributions to Judge Dredd and Lenny Zero, established his reputation. He soon transitioned to the American market, collaborating with writers like Andy Diggle on Vertigo titles such as The Losers and Green Arrow: Year One. His portfolio expanded to include major DC Comics storylines, notably his work on Detective Comics featuring Batman and Batwoman.

Beyond the page, Jock has significantly influenced film aesthetics. He served as the principal concept designer for the 2012 film Dredd and collaborated with director Alex Garland on Ex Machina, specifically designing the AI robot Ava. His filmography of concept work includes titles such as Children of Men, Batman Begins, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Additionally, he has become a celebrated figure in the poster art community, producing limited-edition silk screen prints for Mondo for films like The Thing and Zero Dark Thirty.

Jock's technical range was famously tested in 2011 during a Guinness World Record attempt at London's Kapow! convention. Alongside 61 other creators, he participated in the production of a 20-page Superior comic book. The team completed the entire project—from scripting to lettering—in just 11 hours, 19 minutes, and 38 seconds. His career has been marked by numerous accolades, including a 2006 Eisner Award for Best Cover Artist and a 2019 SXSW Excellence in Poster Design award for his work on Daniel Isn't Real.
