John McAfee: From Pioneering Antivirus Software to a Life of Fugitive Libertarianism
In short: John McAfee created the first commercial antivirus software, yet spent his later years disavowing his own brand. A complex figure, he transitioned from a corporate software architect to a controversial political candidate, cryptocurrency advocate, and international fugitive, eventually dying in a Spanish prison while awaiting extradition to the United States.
Born in 1945 on a U.S. Army base in England, John McAfee’s early life was marked by instability and trauma. After a career spanning NASA, Xerox, and Booz Allen Hamilton, he launched VirusScan in 1987. The software became a global success, making him millions by 1990. However, McAfee grew increasingly disillusioned with the company, eventually labeling its products as bloatware and expressing public gratitude when Intel rebranded the software in 2014, finally severing his association with the firm.
McAfee’s post-corporate life was defined by erratic ventures and legal turbulence. Following the 2008 financial crisis, his fortune reportedly dropped from $100 million to $4 million. He relocated to Belize in 2009, where he engaged in diverse projects ranging from herbal antibiotic research to building mansions. His time in Belize was marked by heavy security and eventual flight from authorities regarding a murder investigation. He later returned to the U.S., where he became a vocal, if unconventional, libertarian activist.
His political career included two unsuccessful bids for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020. Throughout these campaigns, he championed cryptocurrency and privacy, while simultaneously facing federal charges for tax evasion. McAfee claimed he had not filed a tax return since 2010, framing his legal battles as resistance to government overreach. In October 2020, he was arrested in Spain. On 23 June 2021, he was found dead in his prison cell, an apparent suicide that sparked widespread speculation and conspiracy theories.
McAfee remained a polarizing figure until the end. Whether he was staging publicity stunts—such as his claim to decrypt an iPhone or his viral parody video—or pivoting between cybersecurity startups and Bitcoin mining, he consistently challenged conventional norms. His life remains a study in the intersection of early technological genius, extreme personal volatility, and the fringes of political ideology.
