A tech entrepreneur turned governor whose political career was defined by a physical assault
In short: Before becoming Montana's 25th governor, Greg Gianforte built a billion-dollar software empire and championed a unique, faith-based approach to business. Yet, his path to office was marked by a notorious 2017 incident where he assaulted a journalist, an act that drew national headlines and a rare presidential endorsement.
Born in 1961, Greg Gianforte transitioned from a career in engineering at Bell Labs to founding RightNow Technologies in 1997. The company, which provided customer relationship management software, became a significant economic force in Bozeman, Montana, before its $1.5 billion acquisition by Oracle in 2011. Gianforte’s business philosophy, detailed in his 2005 book, emphasized bootstrapping and global expansion. His personal wealth and philanthropic efforts, managed through the Gianforte Family Foundation, have long supported conservative causes and organizations that promote creationist beliefs, including the Glendive Dinosaur and Fossil Museum.
Gianforte’s political trajectory shifted sharply during his 2017 special election campaign for Montana’s at-large congressional seat. On the eve of the election, he assaulted Ben Jacobs, a reporter for The Guardian, after being questioned about health care policy. Eyewitness accounts, including one from Fox News reporter Alicia Acuna, described Gianforte slamming the journalist to the floor. Although his campaign initially issued a false statement blaming the reporter, Gianforte later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault. He was sentenced to 40 hours of community service, anger management therapy, and a fine.
The incident became a flashpoint in American political discourse. While several Montana newspapers rescinded their endorsements following the assault, the event gained notoriety when President Donald Trump praised Gianforte’s actions during a 2018 rally. Despite the controversy, Gianforte’s political base remained resilient. He was elected governor in 2020 and reelected in 2024, becoming the first Republican to hold the office twice since 1996. His tenure has been characterized by conservative policy stances, including opposition to abortion, support for school vouchers, and a rejection of the concept of retirement, which he argues lacks a biblical basis.
