In short: While his brother Wayne became a global icon, John Rooney carved out a distinct path across two continents. From the American soccer fields of the MLS SuperDraft to the gritty intensity of the English National League, John’s journey eventually led him to a remarkable managerial upset against Premier League opposition.

Born in Liverpool in 1990, John Rooney began his footballing education at the Everton Youth Academy at age six. His professional career took an unconventional turn early on; after initial stints in England, he pursued opportunities in the United States. In 2011, he was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the MLS SuperDraft, eventually moving to Orlando City, where he secured his first career championship in 2012 by winning the USL Pro regular season title.

Returning to England, Rooney became a prominent figure in the lower tiers of the football pyramid. His most prolific period arrived at Barrow during the 2019–20 season, where he netted 19 league goals from midfield. His influence was recognized with back-to-back National League Player of the Year awards for the 2019–20 and 2020–21 campaigns. Throughout his playing career, he represented various clubs, including Bury, Wrexham, Stockport County, and Oldham Athletic, before finishing his playing days at Macclesfield.

Transitioning into management, Rooney took the helm at Macclesfield in July 2025. His managerial tenure quickly gained national attention in January 2026, when he orchestrated a significant FA Cup upset. His side defeated Crystal Palace, the reigning FA Cup holders and a Premier League team, with a 2–1 victory in the third round. This achievement marked a high point in his post-playing career, demonstrating his tactical impact on the game beyond his time as an attacking midfielder.
