The complex life of the 8th Earl Spencer, father to a future princess
In short: Edward John Spencer, known as Johnnie, was a British peer and courtier whose life spanned military service, royal duties, and a tumultuous family history. As the father of Diana, Princess of Wales, his legacy is inextricably linked to the modern British monarchy, yet his personal story remains a distinct, often difficult narrative.
Born in 1924, Edward John Spencer was the only son of the 7th Earl Spencer. Educated at Eton and Sandhurst, he entered the military during the Second World War, leading a unit in France shortly after the D-Day landings. His early adulthood included a stint as an aide-de-camp in South Australia and service as an equerry to both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. In 1975, he inherited the earldom and a seat in the House of Lords, holding the title until his death in 1992.
His private life was marked by significant upheaval. An early engagement to Lady Anne Coke was famously thwarted by his father, who cited concerns over potential hereditary health issues within the family line. In 1954, he married Frances Roche, with whom he had five children, including Diana. The marriage was deeply unhappy; reports from family members and accounts from Diana herself described a volatile home environment. The couple separated in 1967 and divorced in 1969, a process complicated by a bitter custody battle in which Frances's own mother testified against her, ultimately leaving the children in John's care.
Following his divorce, Spencer married Raine McCorquodale in 1976. His later years were defined by health struggles, including a severe stroke in 1978 that required an eight-month hospital stay. He eventually passed away from a heart attack in 1992. While he is often remembered primarily as the father of the Princess of Wales, his life reflects the rigid expectations of the British aristocracy, the pressures of royal service, and the private fractures that can exist behind the facade of nobility.
