From undrafted free agent to NFL Comeback Player of the Year
In short: After a stellar college career, Jon Kitna thought his football journey had ended. Instead, a chance encounter with a Seahawks head coach changed everything, launching a professional career defined by improbable comebacks and record-breaking performances across the NFL.
Jon Kitna's professional journey began under unexpected circumstances. After completing a math education degree at Central Washington University, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks on April 25, 1996. This opportunity arose after Seahawks head coach Dennis Erickson visited the campus to scout a receiver, but was instead impressed by Kitna's passing ability. He had originally intended to pursue coaching roles in high school before this professional opportunity surfaced. His decision to finish his degree in mathematics preceded this unexpected career shift.
Kitna's career is marked by significant milestones and statistical feats. In the World League of American Football, he led the league in completions, attempts, passing yards, and touchdowns, while also setting a league record for rushing yards by a quarterback at 334. He later earned MVP honors for leading the Barcelona Dragons to a 38–24 victory in World Bowl V. He also achieved a notable feat by setting a league record for quarterbacks with 334 rushing yards. His performance in the title game included a record-breaking 401 passing yards.
His impact in the NFL was most notable during his tenure with the Cincinnati Bengals. After guiding his squad to an 8–8 finish—their initial non-losing campaign since 1996—he earned the 2005 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. During that season, he achieved a franchise record by throwing 68 passes in a single game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and completed 137 consecutive passes without an interception. During his time in Cincinnati, he also set a team record for passing yards in consecutive games. He notably achieved a franchise record by taking every single offensive snap in a single season.
Beyond his playing days, Kitna has transitioned into coaching. He now directs the football programme at Ohio's Lakota East High School, applying vast expertise gained from the Bengals, Seahawks, Lions, and Cowboys. His professional experience includes stints with the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys. He previously earned induction into both the Central Washington University and Pacific Northwest Football Halls of Fame.
