In short: Kevin Kolb’s ascent from a standout Houston Cougar to an NFL starter was marked by historic statistical feats. Yet, his career was defined as much by sudden injuries and high-stakes trades as it was by his ability to command the field under pressure.

After a prolific collegiate career at the University of Houston, where he was named the 2006 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year, Kevin Kolb entered the NFL via the 2007 draft. Selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round, he spent his early years navigating the complexities of being a backup to established stars like Donovan McNabb.

Kolb’s entry into the starting lineup in 2009 produced a historic statistical anomaly: he became the first quarterback in NFL history to record over 300 passing yards in each of his first two career starts. This streak included a 391-yard performance against the New Orleans Saints and a 327-yard outing against the Kansas City Chiefs, the latter of which earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

However, his path to a full-time starting role was fraught with volatility. After McNabb moved to the Washington Redskins in April 2010, Kolb took over as the Eagles' starter; however, a concussion during the opening match against the Green Bay Packers caused the team to pivot towards Michael Vick. After a stint with the Arizona Cardinals, which included a $63.5 million contract, Kolb's career continued to face challenges from injuries, including turf toe and recurring concussion symptoms.

Kolb's career serves as a study in the precarious nature of professional quarterbacking, where a single hit can alter the trajectory of a franchise's offensive era.
