How Jonathan Taylor evolved from a high school record-breaker to an NFL rushing powerhouse
In short: Jonathan Taylor’s trajectory from Salem High School to the Indianapolis Colts is defined by relentless consistency. After dominating the Big Ten at Wisconsin, he transitioned to the NFL, where he has repeatedly shattered franchise records and led the league in rushing, cementing his status as one of football's elite running backs.
Born in 1999, Jonathan Taylor’s athletic prowess was evident early at Salem High School in New Jersey, where he set a state record with 2,815 rushing yards in his senior season. His collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin–Madison was equally historic. He became the first player in FBS history to surpass 6,000 rushing yards over a three-year span and secured the Doak Walker Award twice, in 2018 and 2019. By the time he declared for the 2020 NFL draft, he ranked fourth on the all-time FBS rushing list.
Selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round of the 2020 draft, Taylor quickly ascended to a starting role. His 2021 season was a masterclass in production, as he led the NFL in both rushing yards and touchdowns, earning unanimous All-Pro honors. During that campaign, he achieved a historic streak, recording at least 100 yards from scrimmage and a rushing touchdown in eight consecutive games. This performance helped him finish as the runner-up for the AP Offensive Player of the Year award.
Despite facing injury setbacks and a brief contract standoff in 2023, Taylor has remained a focal point of the Colts' offense. In 2025, he surpassed Edgerrin James to become the franchise's all-time leader in rushing touchdowns. His sustained excellence led to a significant contract extension in August 2026, solidifying his position as one of the highest-paid players at his position. His career is marked by a rare ability to maintain high-volume production, evidenced by his consistent Pro Bowl selections and league-leading statistics across multiple seasons.
