From Philadelphia standout to Chicago Bears star: the career trajectory of D'Andre Swift
In short: Born in 1999, D'Andre Swift has evolved from a high school phenom in Pennsylvania into a premier NFL running back. After collegiate success at Georgia and stints with the Lions and Eagles, Swift has cemented his status as a dual-threat playmaker, recently securing a significant multi-year extension with Chicago.
D'Andre Swift's journey to professional football began at St. Joseph's Preparatory School, where his senior performance set the stage for a collegiate career at the University of Georgia. Entering the SEC in 2017, Swift initially served in a supporting role behind established talents like Nick Chubb and Sony Michel. By his junior year, he had emerged as a primary offensive weapon, accumulating over 1,200 rushing yards and demonstrating versatility as both a runner and a receiver.
Drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2020, Swift quickly made an impact, becoming the first Lions rookie running back since Barry Sanders in 1989 to record a game with over 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns. His professional path saw him traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023, a season that culminated in his first Pro Bowl selection. This momentum carried into his tenure with the Chicago Bears, where he has continued to refine his role in the backfield.
Swift's time in Chicago has been marked by both individual milestones and historical team achievements. In 2025, he and teammate Kyle Monangai achieved a rare feat by both rushing for over 100 yards in a single game, a performance not seen from a Bears duo since 1985. His production continued to climb, leading to a lucrative contract extension in September 2026. His explosive start to the 2026 season, featuring a three-touchdown game, underscored his ongoing importance to the Bears' offensive strategy.
Beyond the statistics, Swift's career highlights the shifting dynamics of modern NFL running backs, who are increasingly expected to contribute significantly in the passing game. From his early days sharing carries to his current status as a focal point of the Bears' attack, Swift has demonstrated a consistent ability to adapt to new systems and overcome physical setbacks, such as his 2025 groin injury, to remain a productive force on the field.
