How a 90-minute travel rule shaped a Premier League legend

Born in Belfast in 1988, Jonny Evans' ascent through the Manchester United academy was nearly derailed by administrative constraints. At the time, Football Association rules limited clubs to recruiting players living within a 90-minute radius. To ensure Evans could train full-time in Manchester, his family had to move from Northern Ireland to Greater Manchester.
His career became a study in longevity and resilience. Over a 19-year professional journey, Evans amassed more than 600 appearances for club and country. He achieved a rare milestone at Manchester United, winning every major trophy available to the club, including three Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League trophy. His trophy cabinet also includes an FA Cup with Leicester City in 2021 and another with United in 2024.
On the international stage, Evans was a pillar for Northern Ireland, earning 107 caps between 2006 and 2024. He was a key figure in the nation's historic progression to the round of 16 during Euro 2016. His contributions were formally recognized in the 2023 Birthday Honours, when he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to football.
After retiring from professional play in May 2025, Evans transitioned into coaching. Having previously served as a first-team coach at United, he later joined the coaching staff under Michael Carrick, focusing on the development of the next generation of talent.
