The first woman to win Strictly Come Dancing in her debut year
In short: Jowita Przystał broke a long-standing glass ceiling in British ballroom dance. While many professionals spend years perfecting their craft before reaching the top, she secured a series victory in 2022 during her very first season as a professional on the iconic BBC show.
Jowita Przystał's rise to prominence is marked by a rapid ascent through the competitive world of ballroom dance. Born in Poland in 1994, she established her technical foundation early, becoming Polish Open Latin Champion with her partner Michael Danilczuk in 2014. Their journey took them from international competitions and performances with Burn the Floor to major Broadway productions including 'Legally Blonde' and 'Rock of Ages.'
The transition to the United Kingdom in 2019 served as a pivotal career move. In 2020, Przystał and Danilczuk won the second series of The Greatest Dancer, which earned them a £50,000 prize and a platform on BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing. Although she joined the show as a professional in September 2021, her first year was spent primarily in group dances rather than with a celebrity partner.
Her historic milestone occurred during the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing. Partnered with cameraman and presenter Hamza Yassin, Przystał navigated the competition to become the series champions on December 17, 2022. This victory made her the first female professional dancer in the show's history to win their debut year with a celebrity partner, joining an elite group of only five professionals to achieve such a feat.
Since that landmark win, Przystał has continued to be a staple of the production, appearing in multiple series and Christmas Specials. Her career trajectory demonstrates a shift from traditional competitive ballroom to high-profile television stardom, culminating in her announced appearance at Dancing With The Stars Weekends in 2026.
