How a children's song transformed Julia Donaldson into Britain's best-selling author
In short: Before she was a literary titan, Julia Donaldson was a busker in Europe and a songwriter for children's television. It took a single song, turned into a book in 1993, to spark a career that would eventually see her surpass J.K. Rowling in sales.
Donaldson's journey into literature was not a direct path. After studying drama and French at Bristol University, she spent much of the 1970s writing songs for BBC programmes like Play Away and Play School. She also spent time busking in Europe, performing in France and Italy, and even wrote songs in multiple languages, including French and Italian. She was also a junior editor at Michael Joseph. During her university years, she performed in various departmental productions.
The turning point arrived in 1993 when her 1975 song, 'A Squash and a Squeeze,' was adapted into a picture book illustrated by Axel Scheffler. This success gave her the confidence to move from songwriting to storytelling, leading to a prolific period of writing for educational publishers and visiting schools and libraries to engage children through performance. This transition was aided by her experience working with educational publishers like Heinemann. She also began visiting various book festivals to connect with young readers.
Her most significant breakthrough came with the 1999 publication of The Gruffalo. Inspired by a Chinese story about a girl outsmarting a tiger, Donaldson reimagined the concept with a mouse and a woodland setting. The book was an immediate sensation, winning the 1999 Smarties Prize and eventually selling over 10 million copies worldwide in more than 50 languages. The character's name was inspired by the sounds of a buffalo. She originally considered a jungle setting before choosing a woodland environment.
As of January 2025, Donaldson has reached the milestone of being Britain's best-selling author, surpassing J.K. Rowling by approximately 600,000 sales. Her massive body of work includes 184 published titles, though only 64 are widely available in bookshops; the rest are specialized for schools, such as her Songbirds phonic reading scheme. Her extensive collection includes many titles intended specifically for classroom use. This includes her Songbirds phonics programme.
