In short: Julie Adams was a prolific television guest star and leading lady who defined the 1950s screen. Best remembered as the ichthyologist Kay Lawrence in the 1954 classic Creature from the Black Lagoon, her career spanned decades of Westerns, soap operas, and mystery series, leaving an indelible mark on American entertainment history.

Born Betty May Adams in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1926, the actress overcame a difficult childhood to pursue stardom. After being crowned Miss Little Rock in 1946, she moved to Hollywood, where she initially worked as a secretary while refining her speech. Her early career saw her billed as Betty Adams, but Universal Pictures later rebranded her as Julia, a name she eventually adjusted to Julie because she preferred it.

Adams became a staple of the 1950s studio system, starring opposite legends like James Stewart, Rock Hudson, and Tyrone Power. Her most enduring role arrived in 1954 with Creature from the Black Lagoon. The production was so invested in her image that the studio insured her legs for $125,000 with Lloyd's of London. Despite the film's massive success, Adams declined to appear in its sequels, though she later embraced the legacy of the film at conventions in her later years.

Following her Universal contract, Adams transitioned into a formidable television career. She appeared in dozens of iconic shows, ranging from The Andy Griffith Show and Perry Mason to The Streets of San Francisco and Murder, She Wrote. Her versatility allowed her to play everything from a romantic interest to a convicted defendant. She remained active in the industry until her death in 2019 at age 92, having earned accolades including a Golden Boot award and induction into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame.
