From London art student to South Korean screen icon: the evolution of Jung Eun-chae
In short: Jung Eun-chae began her journey in the United Kingdom, studying textile design at Central Saint Martins before abandoning academia for the spotlight. Since her breakthrough in 2013, she has navigated a diverse career, balancing blockbuster spectacles with intimate art-house cinema while establishing her own agency to manage her creative path.
Born Jung Sol-mi in 1986, the actress adopted the stage name Jung Eun-chae to avoid confusion with the veteran performer Park Sol-mi. Her formative years were spent in London, where she lived for eight years starting at age 15. Although she enrolled at Central Saint Martins to pursue textile design, she eventually left the institution without a degree to return to South Korea. Her transition into entertainment was partially inspired by her sibling, who held a position at the production firm Chorokbaem Media.
Jung initially entered the industry as a commercial model, securing the CF Model of the Year title at the 2011 Asia Model Festival Awards. Her transition to acting began with the supernatural thriller Haunters, followed by a television debut in the KBS1 series My Bittersweet Life. Her critical breakthrough arrived in 2013 with the Hong Sang-soo film Nobody's Daughter Haewon, which premiered at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival and earned her significant industry recognition.
Throughout her career, Jung has maintained a versatile portfolio, alternating between high-budget features like The King and The Great Battle and nuanced art films such as The Table. Her television work has spanned genres from the psychological thriller Dr. Frost to the supernatural procedural The Guest. In 2023, she departed from her long-term agency, KeyEast, to launch her own independent firm, Project Hosoo. By 2026, she continued her trajectory with the mystery thriller Honour, an adaptation of the Swedish series Heder.
Beyond her professional life, Jung has remained a figure of public interest. In 2024, it was confirmed that she is in a relationship with the artist and product designer Kim Chung-jae. Having established herself as a consistent presence in both film and television, she remains a notable figure in the South Korean entertainment landscape, recognized for her ability to inhabit complex roles across varying narrative styles.
