From internet beauty icon to a mainstay of Korean drama
In short: Before she was a household name in television dramas, Lee Joo-yeon was an 'Ulzzang'—a term for someone with exceptional natural beauty. Her journey from the digital spotlight of the late 2000s to the leading roles of modern cinema illustrates the evolution of South Korean celebrity culture.
Lee Joo-yeon first gained public attention as an internet sensation known for her 'best face' features. This early fame served as a springboard into the entertainment industry, where she made a brief cinematic cameo in 2007 before joining the girl group After School in early 2009. Her trajectory highlights a specific era of Korean media where digital popularity could be leveraged into traditional idol status.
Her career with After School was marked by significant leadership and endurance. She served as the leader of the sub-unit A.S. Blue starting in 2011, a role she held while balancing her education at Dongduk Women's University. Despite facing health challenges, including a hospitalization for acute nephritis in late 2011, she maintained her group activities until her official graduation from the group in June 2015.
Following her departure from Pledis Entertainment, Joo-yeon pivoted toward a dedicated acting career under Better ENT and later Mystic Story. By signing with C-JeS Entertainment in 2021, she solidified her transition into a versatile actress. Her filmography now spans diverse genres, including crime films like The King and historical dramas such as Saimdang, Memoir of Colors, demonstrating a successful shift from idol to dramatic performer.
Joo-yeon's career is notable for its longevity; she was one of only two members to remain with After School through all promotional periods. This persistence allowed her to build the foundational visibility necessary to sustain a multi-decade presence in both the music and acting industries.
