How a simple shortage of blue markers created an iconic comedy mascot
In short: The world's largest comedy festival, Montreal's Just for Laughs, was once a two-day event. It grew into a global powerhouse of television and live performance, but its journey was marked by financial turmoil, ownership shifts, and a mascot whose signature red horns were the result of a lucky stationery accident.
Founded in 1982 by Gilbert Rozon, Just for Laughs began as a modest two-day French-language event in Montreal. By 1985, under the influence of Andy Nulman, the festival expanded to include English-language programming, eventually evolving into a month-long cultural staple. The festival became a critical hub for the entertainment industry, where talent scouts and producers gathered to discover new acts. Beyond the live stage, the brand expanded into a massive television production entity, with its content reaching audiences in over 150 countries through various platforms and networks.
The festival's visual identity is anchored by Victor, a mascot designed by Vittorio Fiorucci. The character's famous red horns were not a deliberate artistic choice but a practical necessity; when the artist ran out of blue markers, he switched to red. Over the decades, Victor underwent several redesigns, including a 2005 overhaul by Alan Best and a 2007 update by Patrick Dea, which also introduced a wife character named Rose. Despite being absent from branding in 2023, Victor returned as the official logo in December 2025.
The organization faced significant challenges in recent years. Following allegations of sexual misconduct against founder Gilbert Rozon in 2017, the company underwent multiple ownership changes, including acquisitions by ICM Partners and later by Bell Media and Groupe CH. The festival's financial stability was further tested by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the cancellation of the 2020 event and contributed to a severe debt crisis. By March 2024, the company faced bankruptcy, with debts totaling over $25 million. In May 2024, ComediHa! acquired several assets, signaling a new chapter for the festival as it attempts to continue its legacy on a smaller scale.
