How a physics graduate became a titan of South Indian cinema
In short: Before he was a legendary director, K. V. Reddy was a physics graduate and a successful scientific instrument manufacturer. His journey from a cashier at Rohini Pictures to a filmmaker who directed some of India's greatest cinematic masterpieces is a remarkable story of artistic evolution.
Born in 1912 in a Telugu family, K. V. Reddy's path to cinema was anything but linear. After earning a B.Sc. in Physics from Madras Presidency College in 1935, he initially ventured into business. Alongside A. V. V. Krishna Rao, he founded The Standard Scientific Instruments Company, which successfully manufactured school and college equipment between 1936 and 1937.
His transition to film began in 1937 as a cashier for Rohini Pictures. Through his work as a production manager at Vauhini Pictures, he mastered the intricacies of the industry. He eventually became a partner in Vauhini Productions, where he and B. N. Reddy agreed to alternately direct films for the banner. His directorial debut, Bhakta Pothana, was released on 7 January 1943, following production delays caused by the Second World War.
Reddy's filmography was remarkably diverse, spanning mythological epics, fantasy, and social dramas. His filmography includes 14 features, notably the fantasy masterpiece Pathala Bhairavi (1951), the sole South Indian entry shown during the inaugural International Film Festival of India in 1952. His 1954 social drama, Pedda Manushulu, became the first Telugu film to win a National Film Award and left a lasting cultural imprint by turning the term 'Pedda Manushulu' into a synonym for corrupt 'respectable people.'
His legacy was solidified by Mayabazar (1957), which a CNN-IBN poll identified as the finest Indian movie ever via public voting. Over his career, Reddy's ability to adapt complex narratives—ranging from Shakespeare's King Lear to Ibsen's plays—earned him three National Film Awards and a Filmfare Award South.
