How a South Korean Media Giant Tried to Conquer the Global Digital Content Market
In short: Kakao Entertainment was formed in 2021 to consolidate webtoons, music, and film into a global powerhouse. After aggressive acquisitions in North America and a series of legal actions against fan-translation sites, the company is now pivoting its international strategy, signaling a major retreat from direct operation of overseas platforms.
Founded in 2021 through the merger of KakaoPage and Kakao M, Kakao Entertainment was designed to integrate diverse content streams—ranging from web novels to talent management—under one corporate umbrella. The company’s roots trace back to Seoul Records, established in 1978, which evolved through various acquisitions by SK Telecom and eventually Kakao. By 2021, the firm comprised approximately 50 subsidiaries, aiming to leverage its intellectual property across international markets.
The company’s North American expansion was marked by the 2021 acquisitions of serialized-fiction platform Radish and webtoon platform Tapas for a combined US$961.58 million. Simultaneously, Kakao Entertainment aggressively protected its intellectual property by issuing cease-and-desist letters to independent platforms like Tachiyomi, ReaperScan, and Kotatsu, which facilitated fan translations or unauthorized access to its content. This period of rapid growth and enforcement was intended to solidify its presence in the digital storytelling sector.
However, the strategy has shifted significantly. Following the closure of Radish in 2025 and the planned wind-down of Tapas in 2026, the company is consolidating its webtoon and web novel services around KakaoPage. This restructuring reflects a move away from operating overseas platforms in favor of focusing on established businesses like Piccoma in Japan. As part of a broader corporate reorganization, Kakao Entertainment is expected to join the proposed 'Kakao X' entity by 2027, prioritizing operational efficiency and intellectual property licensing over direct international platform management.
