From childhood street fights to the pinnacle of the UFC
In short: Before he was a professional mixed martial artist, Kai Asakura spent his childhood engaged in numerous street fights alongside his brother, Mikuru. This early toughness, combined with a background in karate, sumo, and volleyball, eventually propelled him from the Rizin Fighting Federation to the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Kai Asakura's journey into professional mixed martial arts began in 2012 under the DEEP banner. His path was heavily influenced by his brother, Mikuru Asakura, who introduced him to the sport at the Zen Dokai Toyohashi Dojo while Kai was a student at Aichi Prefectural Toyohashi Technical High School. This sibling connection proved pivotal, as Mikuru's encouragement drove Kai's interest in fighting.
Asakura's career is marked by significant milestones in major promotions. He became a two-time Rizin Bantamweight Champion, a title he secured after a notable knockout victory against Hiromasa Ougikubo in the first round. His dominance in Rizin was punctuated by a six-fight winning streak that included a high-profile knockout of Kyoji Horiguchi, an achievement that earned him the 2019 Upset of the Year.
In June 2024, Asakura signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). His tenure in the UFC has seen him compete across weight classes, including a flyweight title bout against Alexandre Pantoja in December 2024. He has also demonstrated his striking power in the bantamweight division, earning a $100,000 Performance of the Night award for his first-round knockout of Cameron Smotherman in May 2026.
Despite his successes, Asakura's career has faced challenges from injuries, including a right knee injury that delayed a fight in Rizin 13 and a right hand injury that forced his withdrawal from a scheduled bout against Ji Yong Yang in June 2022. His resilience remains a defining characteristic of his professional combat career.
