In short: Tatsu Yamashiro, known as Katana, is a formidable DC Comics superheroine defined by her mastery of the blade and a haunting personal tragedy. After her husband Maseo was killed by his brother, his spirit became trapped within her sword, the Soultaker, turning her weapon into a vessel for the departed.

First introduced in 1983 within the pages of The Brave and the Bold #200, Katana was the brainchild of writer Mike W. Barr and artist Jim Aparo. Barr sought to diversify the Outsiders, a black ops team assembled by Batman, by adding female members to the roster. He drew inspiration from his fascination with Japanese culture and the samurai tradition to craft Tatsu, a character who balances lethal combat proficiency with the heavy burden of her past.

The Soultaker sword is central to her identity. Forged in the 14th century by Muramasa, the blade is said to be cursed, capable of capturing the souls of those it strikes. Within the DC Universe, these trapped spirits can sometimes communicate with the wielder or be summoned to fight through specific rituals. In later iterations, such as the New 52, the sword was reimagined as a mystical totem associated with a secret society of weapon clans, allegedly granting enlightenment and immortality to its owner.

Katana's journey has spanned numerous teams, including the Birds of Prey and the Suicide Squad. Her narrative often explores themes of honor, duty, and the psychological toll of her vigilante life. Whether she is portrayed as a CIA agent in Beware the Batman or a bodyguard in the 2016 film Suicide Squad, the core of her character remains anchored in her relentless pursuit of justice and the complex, often painful connection she maintains with the spirit of her husband residing in her blade.
