How a single school system provides stability for millions of moving families
In short: When parents in the Indian Defence Services are transferred to remote outposts, their children face a massive educational hurdle. One of the world's largest school chains solves this by providing a perfectly uniform curriculum, ensuring that a student's education remains seamless, regardless of where their next posting takes them.
Established in 1963 as 'Central Schools,' the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) was designed to support the children of Indian Defence Services personnel. As these families are frequently relocated to geographically diverse or remote locations, the system provides a common syllabus and bilingual instruction in English and Hindi. This standardization ensures that students do not face educational disadvantages during parental transfers.
The scale of the organization is immense. From a humble beginning of just 20 schools in 1963, the network has expanded to 1,256 schools as of February 2025. While the vast majority are located within India, the reach extends globally, with three schools situated inside Indian Embassies in Kathmandu, Moscow, and Tehran. The Moscow campus even offers students the choice of French or Russian as an additional language.
The system's administration is highly structured, managed by a headquarters in New Delhi, 25 Regional Offices, and five Zonal Institutes of Education and Training (ZIETs). While the network has grown to include children of all central government employees, it remains a non-profit organization under the Department of School Education and Literacy.
Recent years have seen significant shifts in policy. In April 2022, the Centre abolished the 'MP quota,' a special provision that allowed Members of Parliament to recommend up to ten students for admission. This move removed the influence of parliamentary recommendations from the admissions process, moving toward a more standardized entry system.
