How a South Korean actor transformed his fame into a sustainable social movement
In short: Kim Nam-gil is a celebrated actor known for balancing commercial blockbusters with artistic roles. Yet, his most enduring project may be Gilstory, an NGO he founded to move beyond temporary relief work. By leveraging his public platform, he has built a systematic approach to supporting marginalized creators and cultural heritage.
Kim Nam-gil began his career in 1999, eventually rising to prominence as the breakout star of the 2009 historical drama Queen Seondeok. His portrayal of the character Bidam—inspired by comic book figures like Miyamoto Musashi—was so popular that writers expanded his role, turning the series into a dual-lead narrative. This breakthrough propelled him into a versatile career spanning disaster blockbusters like 2016's Pandora and crime-comedies such as 2019's The Fiery Priest, for which he won the Grand Prize at the SBS Drama Awards.
Beyond the screen, Kim’s trajectory shifted significantly in 2010 during a volunteer trip to Indonesia. Disturbed by the superficiality of short-term relief efforts, he sought a more sustainable model for social contribution. This led to the 2013 official registration of Gilstory, a non-profit organization based in Seoul. Unlike traditional charities, Gilstory operates as a collective of over 100 experts—including lawyers, IT specialists, and artists—who provide pro bono services to support cultural arts and the socially disadvantaged.
Kim’s commitment to social impact continues to evolve. In 2024, he launched the 'Together' campaign in partnership with KB Kookmin Bank, specifically targeting youth aging out of care systems. By providing creative funds and mentorship, the initiative aims to foster both emotional and economic independence for young artists. This blend of artistic rigor and systematic philanthropy defines Kim’s career, proving that a performer's influence can extend far beyond the limits of a film set or a television broadcast.
