How an Australian rock band released five studio albums in a single calendar year
In short: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard is a prolific Australian band known for defying genre boundaries and building a sprawling, interconnected fictional universe. From recording vocals through iPhones to encouraging fans to press their own vinyl, they have redefined modern music production through sheer volume and relentless creative experimentation.
Formed in Melbourne in 2010, the band began as a fluid collective of friends who chose their nonsensical name simply because it was the most absurd option available. Their early sound was rooted in garage rock and surf music, but they quickly pivoted toward a restless exploration of styles. By 2013, they had begun experimenting with odd time signatures, a hallmark that would define their later, more complex compositions.
The band's output is defined by high-concept projects and extreme productivity. In 2017, they famously fulfilled a promise to release five studio albums in a single year, earning them Band of the Year honors from Consequence of Sound. Their discography spans jazz fusion, thrash metal, folk, and microtonal music, often featuring recurring motifs that link their albums into a shared narrative universe fans call the Gizzverse. Their 2016 album Nonagon Infinity, designed as a never-ending loop where the last track flows back into the first, remains a critical high point.
Beyond their music, the band has pioneered unique ways to engage their audience. For their 2017 album Polygondwanaland, they released the music as a free download, explicitly encouraging fans and independent labels to create their own physical pressings. By August 2023, the Discogs database listed 363 different versions of that single record. This collaborative spirit extends to their technical approach; they have shared raw stems for songs like 'Automation' and recorded vocals using unconventional methods, such as placing four iPhones around a room to capture a specific, lo-fi aesthetic.
The band's live presence has grown alongside their studio output. While they started with small local shows, they have scaled up to massive international venues, including a 17,500-capacity performance at the Hollywood Bowl in 2023. Despite lineup changes and the departure of long-time member and manager Eric Moore in 2020, the group continues to surprise fans with spontaneous releases, such as their 28th studio album, Alien Metal, which arrived without warning in August 2026.
